Objections to Water Baptism: Exploring Biblical Truth

Introduction

In a world filled with differing perspectives on baptism, it's essential for Christians to rely on the unchanging truth of God's Word, the Bible. The Scriptures serve as our ultimate guide, providing clarity on matters of faith and practice. This blog post aims to address common objections to water baptism by delving into the New Testament and its teachings. Let's explore 18 objections and uncover the proper contextual biblical responses.

1. Objection: “Baptism for Same Reason As Jesus”

Response: Some argue that since Jesus was sinless, His baptism couldn't have been for the remission of sins, and therefore, our baptism today is merely an imitation of His example. However, we must remember that John the Baptist's baptism was one of repentance for the remission of sins (Mark 1:4). When Jesus approached John for baptism, He clarified that His baptism was an exception, meant "to fulfill all righteousness" (Matthew 3:15). We cannot equate Jesus' baptism with ours, as it had a unique purpose.

2. Objection: "Inviting Jesus into Your Heart"

Response: Some claim that Revelation 3:20 supports the idea that all a sinner needs to do is invite Jesus into their hearts. However, it's crucial to consider the context (Revelation 3:14-22). This invitation was directed at lukewarm Christians, not non-believers. To be "in Christ" is necessary for salvation (Galatians 3:26-27; Rom. 6:3-4), and this invitation does not apply to those outside of Christ.
