Be the Church
Living as the Body of Christ
Being a part of a church involves more than merely showing up on Sundays. The Bible paints a vivid picture of what it means to be genuinely invested in a community of faith. The Apostle Paul likens the church to a body—each part essential, unique, and purposed for the health and function of the whole (1 Corinthians 12:12-27). To live as authentic followers of Jesus Christ, attending church isn't sufficient; you must be the church.
Love the Church
The Apostle Paul's letters often express affection and concern for the churches. In Ephesians 5:25, Paul exhorts husbands to love their wives "even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it." The emphasis here is on a sacrificial love—a love that gives without expecting anything in return. Loving the church means going beyond superficial interactions and seeking authentic relationships and community.
Serve the Church
Service is an essential part of Christian life. Galatians 5:13 advises, "by love serve one another." Serving in the church isn't limited to what we can visibly see—like leading singing or waiting on the Lord’s table. It also includes behind-the-scenes roles and merely being available to assist others in times of need. Serving isn't a task; it's a way of life.
Give Through the Church
Giving is an act of worship and obedience. 2 Corinthians 9:7 states, "Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver." Giving isn't restricted to finances. Time, talents, and resources are also ways you can contribute to the mission of the church.
Invite People to Church
The Great Commission in Matthew 28:19 commands, "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations." Inviting people to church isn't just about increasing numbers; it's about extending the Kingdom of God. Your invitation could be a doorway for someone else to experience the life-transforming power of the Gospel.
Worship God with the Church
The primary purpose of the church is to worship God. As John 4:24 states, "God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth." Worship isn't merely a set of songs or a ritual; it is so much more than liturgical service. It is a whole involvement of the heart in reverence to Almighty God.
Encourage the Church
In Romans 15:4, it says, "For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope." Words of encouragement can uplift a community. Through shared experiences, prayers, and acts of kindness, you can be a source of hope for others.
Participate in the Church
Active participation in the life of the church is vital. Hebrews 10:25 warns against neglecting to meet together, and instead encourages believers to "exhort one another." Participation isn't limited to attendance; it involves engaging in the teaching, community, and mission of the church.
Pray for the Church
Ephesians 6:18 instructs believers to "Pray always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints." Prayer isn't an individual act but a corporate one, where the congregation joins together to seek God's will and favor.
Conclusion
Being the church entails loving, serving, giving, inviting, worshiping, encouraging, participating, and praying. It calls for an engaged, active role in a community of faith. In doing so, not only are you fulfilling the commandments of God, but you are also building a stronger, more resilient, and loving church. Let's not just attend church—let's be the church.
